Between Grands Causses and Ségala, the plateau of Lévézou offers a preserved nature with places out of the ordinary !
Waterfall of Agen d'Aveyron and Forest of the Palanges :
The town of Agen d'Aveyron hosts the forest of the Palanges (444 ha), the biggest forest-covered land of Lévézou. For centuries, the economy of the village was strongly linked to the exploitation of the forest's coppices. Woodcutters used to make « faisses » (the langue d'oc word for bundles of branches), and then sell them as fuel to bakers from Rodez.
Today the forest looks different: pine and fir trees have replaced the oak coppices, where people like to stroll, along pleasant trails where they make unusual discoveries, such as the superb waterfall on the Palanges stream, the Saint Lazare Chapel or, in the heart of the forest, an old shelter for "faisseliers" (ancient word for basket makers).
To reach the waterfall : from Agen d'Aveyron, drive in direction of Millau for 1,5km (D29 road) and stop next to an old quarry. From there, a footpath will take you to the waterfall (45mn round trip walk).
Near the town of Salmiech, a peculiar rocky ensemble, which bears an uncanny resemblance to a mushroom, catches the eye. Is it only rocky chaos, or human intervention?
